Beach Birds and Stolen Lunches: Our Seagull Coloring Adventure

Pulling out the seagull coloring pages right before lunch was, in hindsight, terrible timing. Marcus immediately launched into his beach vacation story about the seagull that stole his sandwich.

Twenty minutes later we were still discussing criminal birds.

The Great Seagull Debate

"They're mean birds," announced Sophia, coloring hers with angry eyebrows she added herself. This from the child who insists all animals are friends.

Half the class agreed. The other half had never seen a real seagull.

Turns out landlocked kids think seagulls are exotic. Like parrots, but gray. Meanwhile, my three beach kids were drawing french fries next to their birds because "that's what they eat, Mrs. K." Not wrong, but we had a whole discussion about natural diet versus parking lot diet.

Teacher Tip:

Let them share their seagull stories first. You'll never get through the coloring otherwise.

Wednesday's Color Revolution

We discovered seagulls aren't just white and gray. Thank you, James, for that National Geographic moment during computer time.

Black-headed gulls. Ring-billed gulls. Something called a laughing gull that made everyone practice their evil laughs. Suddenly my simple coloring sheets became a species study. The art teacher walked by and asked why everyone was cackling.

I showed her Lily's rainbow gull.

She understood.

Somehow This Became Science

Thursday. Different class, same seagull pages. This group went full documentary mode.

"Do they have noses?" Ben asked, studying his paper like it held secrets. This led to a fifteen-minute investigation into how birds smell things. We colored nostrils. I've been teaching eight years and this was a first.

Emma decided her seagull needed webbed feet details. Soon everyone was adding toe webbing. Very scientific toe webbing in purple and green, but still. The focus was intense.

Until snack time when someone mentioned seagulls eat garbage and we had to discuss bird digestion.

During snack.

Parent Note:

Your kid might come home very concerned about what seagulls eat. Mine asked if we could leave crackers on the roof.

The Pose Problem

My seagull sheets showed standing birds. Peaceful. Dignified even.

Not good enough for Room 12.

They wanted flying seagulls. Diving seagulls. "Battle seagulls" (William's term, not mine). So we modified. Wings got added. Crazy wings that looked like elaborate mustaches, but they were proud of them.

Maria drew hers carrying a whole pizza. "It happened to my uncle." Fair enough.

By Friday I gave up on accuracy and embraced the chaos. We had ninja seagulls, princess seagulls, and one wearing what appeared to be boots. They were engaged for forty-five solid minutes. Do you know how rare that is on a Friday afternoon?

Quick Questions from Parents This Week

Why does my kid keep screaming like a seagull?

We learned about laughing gulls. The screaming should stop by Tuesday. If not, blame YouTube, not me.

Are seagulls actually everywhere?

No, but try explaining that to second graders who just discovered gulls live near large lakes too. "Even in Kansas?" Yes, Emma. Even in Kansas.

What's with the french fry drawings?

Your child is observant. Disturbingly observant. We colored traditional fish-eating seagulls too, but apparently fast food is more memorable.

Next week we're doing penguins. Nobody has penguin trauma stories, right?

Actually, don't answer that.
