Download PDFThat Time We Learned Geography Through Penguin Coloring Pages
Jacob was absolutely certain penguins lived in Alaska. Had a whole argument prepared about it during morning meeting.
This is how penguin coloring pages turned into our accidental geography unit last month. I just wanted a quiet Friday activity after the fire drill chaos.
Should've known better.
The South Pole Revelation
We had the globe out. Then the tablets. Then somehow we're virtual touring Antarctica at 9:47am on a Friday.
All because Melissa asked if penguins ever meet polar bears.
Teacher Tip:
Keep a world map handy when doing penguin coloring. Trust me on this one.
The coloring pages sat there while we figured out why Santa doesn't have penguins. Logan was devastated. Had to pivot quick—told them about leopard seals instead. Maybe not my best move.
Twenty minutes later we're back to coloring, but now everyone wants to add icebergs.
Wednesday's Orange Penguin Situation
Different day, same penguins, totally different problem.
Emma decided her penguin was "tropical." Orange belly, pink feet, green beak. The realistic coloring crowd was not having it. You know the ones—they bring their own 64-pack of Crayolas from home.
But then Emma explained her penguin migrated for vacation.
Suddenly everyone's penguins were on vacation. Hawaiian shirt patterns drawn on bellies. Sunglasses added with markers. One kid gave his penguin a passport. Not sure where he learned about passports, but there we were.
Art teacher walked by, saw the chaos, just kept walking.
The Baby Penguin Discovery
Three weeks in, found a sheet with baby penguins. Fluffy gray ones. Game changer.
Nobody knew baby penguins were gray. Nobody. Had three kids convinced I was making it up until we pulled up actual photos.
Marcus spent forty minutes—I timed it—adding individual fluff marks with a gray colored pencil. Wouldn't even go to PE. Had to negotiate with Coach about it.
Quick Tip:
Save the baby penguin pages for when you really need focused quiet time.
The precision those fluffy penguins inspired was unreal. Even my usual speed-colorers slowed down. Something about getting the fluff "just right."
Emperor Versus Little Blue
Did you know there are penguins called Little Blues? I didn't. Kai did.
His older sister had a penguin phase apparently. So when everyone's making their penguins four feet tall (in their minds), Kai's insisting his is "actual size" at one foot.
Led to measuring everything in the classroom against penguin heights. Trash can: two Emperor penguins. My coffee mug: one Little Blue. The reading chair: three and a half Emperor penguins.
Still have "penguin height" labels around the room. Parent conference next week should be interesting.
When Sliding Became Everything
The sliding penguin coloring page was supposed to be for early finishers. Instead, it started The Slide Debates.
How fast do penguins slide? Can they stop? Do they slide on purpose or by accident?
Zoe drew motion lines. Tyler added ice spray. Someone gave their sliding penguin a scared expression, which led to a whole discussion about whether penguins have feelings. I was not prepared for that on a Tuesday before lunch.
Best part: caught two kids "penguin sliding" down the hallway on their bellies after dismissal. Custodian was not amused. Parents thought it was hilarious. Mixed reviews overall.
We've moved on to other animals now. But yesterday during indoor recess, found a group voluntarily coloring more penguins. They'd created a whole penguin school, complete with a penguin teacher wearing glasses.
The penguin teacher was holding coloring pages.
