Download PDFThe Pelican Thursday That Changed Everything
Pulling out the pelican coloring pages during silent reading, I thought we'd have a calm indoor recess. The rain was hammering the windows. Twenty-three second graders needed something to do.
I was spectacularly wrong about the calm part.
The Pouch Situation
Nobody warned me about the pouch debates. Seriously, is there a teacher manual that covers pelican anatomy arguments?
Lily insisted the pouch should be pink "like bubble gum." Marcus said orange because he saw it on YouTube. Then Emma, my usually quiet one, stood up and declared pelicans store babies in their pouches like kangaroos.
That's when everything shifted.
Teacher Tip:
Have a phone ready to Google "what pelicans actually eat" because someone will ask if they eat sharks. They'll be disappointed.
By 10:45, we had baby pelicans riding in pouches. Fish wearing sunglasses. One pelican with what appeared to be french fries hanging out of its bill.
Jackson's pelican was purple with green spots.
"It's camouflage," he explained, like I was slow. "For hiding in coral reefs." When I mentioned pelicans don't live in coral reefs, he just looked at me with pity.
Wednesday's Revenge
Actually, I should back up. Wednesday, we'd tried realistic bird drawings. Complete disaster involving somehow getting crayon on the ceiling.
So Thursday's pelican pages were supposed to be easier. Structured. Contained.
Instead, Aiden decided pelicans needed "battle armor." I still don't know why. Within ten minutes, half the class was drawing medieval pelican knights while the other half made their pelicans into pizza delivery birds.
The pizza thing started because Sarah said the pouch looked like a pizza pocket.
Obviously.
What Actually Worked (Eventually)
After lunch—everyone was calmer after chicken nugget day—we tried again. This time I showed them actual pelican photos on the smartboard.
"Their beaks are HUGE," gasped Mia.
That's when the measuring started. Every kid needed to know if a pelican beak was bigger than their arm, their lunchbox, their pencil box. We measured everything against hypothetical pelican beaks for twenty minutes.
Parent Note:
Your child might come home insisting the family needs a "pelican measuring chart." Just go with it.
The breakthrough came when Trevor asked if pelicans were dinosaurs. Before I could answer, the class decided yes, obviously, look at them.
So we colored dinosaur pelicans. Prehistoric pelicans. Pelicans that survived the meteor.
Somehow this made more sense than the pizza thing.
The Afternoon Pelican Assembly
By 2pm, they'd created an entire pelican civilization. The wall by the cubbies became "Pelican City" with everyone's colored pages forming neighborhoods.
The purple spotted one was apparently the mayor.
They assigned jobs: Fisher pelicans (colored with blue), guard pelicans (inexplicably orange), and teacher pelicans (wearing tiny glasses drawn with pencil). One pelican was a "professional sleeper" because Anna ran out of ideas.
During dismissal, three parents asked why their kids were making pelican noises. I had no good answer. Still don't.
Friday Morning Update
They came in asking for more pelican pages.
Not just any birds—specifically pelicans. "The ones with the big chompers," as David called them. Which, technically, pelicans don't have teeth, but I was choosing my battles.
We colored pelicans through morning work. During math, someone asked if we could do pelican word problems. At lunch, the cafeteria lady asked me why multiple kids were pretending to have pouches under their chins.
The janitor found crayon marks shaped like pelican feet in the hallway. I don't know when that happened.
Questions That Caught Me Off Guard
Can pelicans see in the dark?
We googled it. They can't, really. But Jayden's glow-in-the-dark pelican was already half colored, so we decided his was "special."
Do pelicans have friends?
They live in groups called pods or scoops. The class voted that "scoops" was better. Now we say "a scoop of pelicans" which sounds like ice cream but whatever works.
Why don't pelicans live in trees?
Some actually do nest in trees. This blew their minds completely. Tree pelicans became the next coloring theme. With treehouses. Obviously.
Could a pelican eat a whole pizza?
I honestly don't know. We decided probably not, but the pizza delivery pelican drawings continued anyway.
Next week we're supposed to do eagles. But honestly? After Pelican Thursday and Pizza Pelican Friday, I'm a little scared.
At least twelve kids asked if eagles and pelicans are enemies.
I should probably research that.
