What Happened When We Tried Parrot Coloring Pages

"Miss, can parrots actually talk or do they just copy sounds?" Maria asked this while coloring her parrot's wing purple. Not the question I expected during our rainforest unit.

I'd grabbed parrot coloring pages thinking tropical birds would be straightforward. Bright colors, curved beaks, done.

By 10:30, we had a full-blown debate about whether parrots have their own language.

The Pirate Thing Nobody Warned Me About

Three minutes in, Tyler started talking like a pirate. Because parrots.

Then everyone was doing it. Even while coloring. Twenty-two second graders saying "arrr" every time they picked up a new crayon.

I let it happen. Sometimes you just... let it happen. Besides, Brandon was actually sitting still for once, even if he was muttering about treasure between color changes.

Teacher Tip:

If pirates happen, lean in. We turned it into "Polly wants proper coloring" and suddenly everyone cared about staying in the lines.

The macaw pages started something different. Jenna announced they were "fancy parrots" and needed glitter.

We don't have glitter. Not since November.

Friday's Discovery About Beaks

Marcus colored his parrot's beak black. "Like a can opener," he said.

That led to fifteen minutes of discussing what parrots eat. Turns out half my class thought parrots only ate crackers. The other half insisted on "tropical food," which apparently means pineapple and nothing else.

We looked it up during computer time. Seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables—the list surprised everyone. Even me, honestly. I didn't know about the clay eating thing.

Next coloring session, everyone wanted to add food to their pictures. Tiny bananas everywhere. Some floating, some in the parrot's feet, one kid drew a full grocery store in the corner.

Rainbow Parrots Versus Real Parrots

Wednesday was interesting. I showed them actual parrot photos before coloring.

Big mistake? Maybe.

Emma spent twenty minutes trying to match the exact green of a Amazon parrot with our ancient Crayolas. She mixed yellow and blue on the paper. It looked like moss, but she was proud, so we went with it.

Meanwhile, Alex decided real colors were "boring" and created what he called a "sunset parrot." Orange body, pink head, purple tail. When Emma told him that wasn't real, he said his parrot was from "a different rainforest."

Can't argue with that logic.

Parrot Activities That Actually Happened

  • ✦ Beak strength test with clothespins (Mason pinched himself immediately)
  • ✦ "Repeat after me" game that devolved into screaming
  • ✦ Perching practice at recess (two skinned knees)
  • ✦ Making paper tail feathers (worked surprisingly well)

After the Cockatoo Incident

Someone's older sister told them cockatoos scream. Really scream.

We watched a video during snack. Bad idea. Really bad idea.

The lunch lady asked what happened in our room. Apparently you could hear us in the cafeteria. I blamed it on "enthusiastic learning" and changed the subject.

The cockatoo pages got colored very quietly after that. Oliver whispered that his cockatoo was "a quiet one." Sarah nodded seriously and added a tiny pillow next to hers so it could nap.

Sometimes they fix their own problems.

Questions That Keep Coming Up

Why do parrots copy words?

We decided it's how they make friends. This led to everyone copying each other for ten minutes straight. Including me, eventually.

Can you teach parrots bad words?

Someone's uncle apparently did this. We quickly moved on to discussing appropriate parrot vocabulary. My suggestion of "please and thank you" was deemed boring.

Do parrots have favorite colors?

Nobody knows, but Lily insists her aunt's parrot only plays with red toys. This started a whole thing about what colors birds can see. Turns out they see more colors than us? That broke some tiny minds.

How long do parrots remember things?

Longer than second graders remember to push in their chairs, that's for sure. We looked this up and found out some parrots live 80 years. Immediate panic about who takes care of them when their owners get old.

The parrot pages are still popular during free choice. Last week, Isabella made a "parrot family reunion" with seventeen different parrots.

All purple. Every single one.

She said they're from the purple rainforest that scientists haven't found yet.
