Download PDFEagles and Second Graders: A Reality Check
I thought eagle coloring pages would be straightforward. Patriotic bird, Fourth of July coming up, perfect timing.
Then Jayden asked if eagles were bigger than cars.
The whole class stopped coloring. Suddenly everyone had opinions about eagle sizes, and somehow we spent forty minutes looking up wingspan measurements on the smartboard while abandoned eagle pages sat on desks, one wing brown, the other unfinished.
The Measurement Disaster
We tried using the tape measure from the supply closet. Six feet doesn't look that impressive until you have kids spread their arms trying to be eagles.
Anthony knocked over the water cups.
While cleaning that up, Maria and her table had already turned their eagles rainbow colored because "bald eagles are boring colors." Can't really argue with seven-year-old logic when she's not wrong—brown and white aren't exactly thrilling to color for twenty minutes.
Parent Note:
Your kid might come home insisting eagles can carry off small dogs. We looked it up. They technically can.
Benjamin Franklin Had a Point
Thursday's attempt went better. Found simpler eagle pages, just heads this time. Mentioned Franklin wanted turkeys as the national bird.
Big mistake.
Now half the class was team turkey, the other half defending eagles, and Marcus—who never talks—gave a whole speech about how eagles steal fish from other birds so they're "basically bullies with wings."
Where does a second grader even learn that?
The Golden Eagle Confusion
Brought out different eagle species pages on Monday. Thought exposure to golden eagles, harpy eagles, even sea eagles would expand their knowledge.
Chaos. Absolute chaos.
"Why is it called bald if it has feathers?" "Can golden eagles turn things to gold?" "Ms. T, this one looks angry."
The harpy eagle pictures actually scared two kids. Those things look like they have opinions about your life choices. Switched back to regular bald eagles after snack.
Teacher Tip:
Stick with bald eagles until at least third grade. Harpy eagles will haunt their dreams.
When It Finally Clicked
Week two, lowered my expectations. Put on some patriotic music (quietly, because Mr. Peterson complains), handed out the simplest eagle pages I could find.
Told them eagles see four times better than humans. That's it. That was my only eagle fact for the day.
Somehow this launched the best discussion we'd had all year. "Can they see through walls?" "Do they need glasses when they're old?" "If I was an eagle could I see my dad at work?"
That last one from Sophia made everyone stop. We ended up talking about how eagles can spot a rabbit from two miles away, which led to them calculating if an eagle on the school roof could see their houses. Geography, math, and science in one coloring session. Sometimes you just stumble into teaching gold.
FAQs from Other Teachers
Do eagles work for President's Day?
Yes, but they'll want to color them red, white AND blue. Not just the head white. All of it. Just embrace it.
What about that eagle screech from movies?
Don't. Do not play real eagle sounds. They sound like seagulls with a cold and it ruins everything. One kid cried. Keep the mystery alive.
Simple or detailed eagle pages?
Detailed feathers look impressive in theory. In reality, you'll have twenty kids asking "Is this part white or brown?" every thirty seconds.
Go simple. Trust me on this.
How do you explain the "bald" part?
I said it means white-headed and comes from an old word. That satisfied most of them.
Except Trevor, who insisted his grandpa was bald and definitely didn't have white hair.
