When Crows Became the Coolest Birds in Room 12

"Mrs. K, crows can use tools like ACTUAL TOOLS." Marcus was practically vibrating during morning meeting.

I'd brought out the crow coloring pages thinking we'd do a quick Halloween tie-in. Twenty minutes, tops. Color them black, maybe add some orange construction paper pumpkins.

That was Monday.

By Friday, we had a crow research station, sixteen different shades of "black" discovered with various coloring tools, and one very passionate second-grade crow expert who kept interrupting math to share crow facts.

The Great Black Crayon Shortage

You know what's funny about crow coloring pages? Every kid immediately reaches for the black crayon. All twenty-two of them. We have exactly four good black crayons.

Lily solved it first. She used dark purple.

"Crows aren't really black anyway," she announced. "They're iridescent." I didn't know she knew that word. Turns out her older sister told her, but still.

Teacher Tip:

Hide half your black crayons before crow day. Trust me on this one.

Soon we had purple crows, dark blue crows, and someone discovered if you layer brown over dark green it makes this amazing almost-black. The kid who figured that out looked like he'd discovered fire.

Marcus and the Crow Video Incident

Thursday morning. I'm setting up for reading groups when Marcus comes flying over—literally sliding in his socks.

"I FOUND THE VIDEO."

What video? The crow using tools video. His mom had looked it up after he wouldn't stop talking about crows at dinner. Apparently, they watched seventeen crow videos before bedtime.

So we watched it. A crow bending a wire to get food. My class lost their minds. Complete pandemonium. Good pandemonium, but still.

The coloring pages suddenly became engineering blueprints. Kids started adding tools to their crows' feet. Hammers, mostly. One optimistic soul gave his crow a tiny laptop.

Why Nobody Wanted Ravens

I'd actually printed both crow and raven pages. Thought I was being thorough.

Ravens stayed in the pile.

"Ravens are bigger," I mentioned, trying to make them sound cool. Nothing. "They live longer." Crickets. "They can learn to talk like parrots." Finally, some interest from Sarah, but she still stuck with her crow.

Then Emma, quiet Emma who usually colors everything pink, drops this: "Crows have families. Ravens are loners." She'd been reading the crow facts poster I'd hastily printed Tuesday.

That settled it. Crows were family birds. Ravens were, in the words of my seven-year-olds, "kind of sad."

Quick Tip:

Print crow facts on the back of coloring pages. Kids actually read them while they wait for black crayons.

The Playground Crow Watch

Friday recess changed everything.

Three actual crows landed on the playground fence. You'd think celebrities had arrived. My entire class abandoned kickball, four-square, everything. They stood there, completely silent, watching these crows.

"It's looking at me," whispered James.

"They remember faces," Marcus informed everyone. He'd become our crow expert. "If you're mean to them, they tell other crows."

Twenty-two kids simultaneously decided to be very, very nice to these crows. Someone offered them goldfish crackers through the fence. The crows left. My kids were devastated.

Back inside, everyone colored their crows with new respect. These weren't Halloween decorations anymore. These were portraits of genuinely impressive birds who might remember them.

Crow Facts We Learned (The Hard Way)

Our crow coloring adventure taught us things. Not all of them made it into the official lesson plan.

Crows have regional dialects. Marcus told his table this, and they spent fifteen minutes cawing in different "accents." I let it happen. Pick your battles.

A group of crows is called a murder. Should not have mentioned this right before lunch.

Crows can hold grudges for years. This led to a very serious class discussion about which kids the playground crows might remember. Tyler was convinced they'd marked him because of the goldfish incident.

Do crow coloring pages work for younger kids?

My kindergarten colleague tried them. Half her class was scared of the beaks. The other half gave their crows rainbow wings. She said it was "an experience" and changed her afternoon plans.

What's the difference between crow and raven coloring pages?

Ravens are bigger with wedge-shaped tails. Crows have fan-shaped tails. My kids did not care about tail shapes. They cared that crows hang out together and ravens don't. Social dynamics matter more than anatomy in second grade.

Any tips for the black crayon situation?

Introduce colored crows from the start. Show them pictures of crows in sunlight where you can see the blue and purple. Or just embrace the chaos when everyone wants black at once. Character building.

The crow pages are still in our art center. Kids pick them during free choice now, adding increasingly elaborate backgrounds. Yesterday someone drew a crow teaching school. It had tiny glasses.

Marcus still interrupts with crow facts. We're all learning to live with it.
