Download PDFThe Cockatiel Week That Changed Everything
Three kids in my class have cockatiels as pets. I know this now.
Found out Monday when I pulled out the cockatiel coloring pages thinking we'd do a quick Australian birds unit. Suddenly I had three tiny experts correcting everything I said.
"Mrs. K, their crests show feelings!" Lily practically shouted. The whole class turned to look at her. Even the kids who never pay attention during science.
Monday's Crest Discovery
So apparently cockatiels have this crest that's like a mood ring. Lily demonstrated with her hands on her head.
Up means happy or curious. Flat means scared or angry. Everyone immediately wanted to draw different crest positions on their pages.
Marcus drew his with the crest straight up like a mohawk. "He's SUPER excited," he announced. Then added spikes. Because of course he did.
Quick Tip:
Print multiple copies. They'll want to show every emotion.
By lunch, I had twenty-two cockatiels showing twenty-two different emotions. Including one that was apparently "confused about math" with a sideways crest.
The Orange Cheek Situation
Tuesday's problem: the orange cheek patches.
See, the coloring pages show those distinctive round patches on their cheeks. But we only had regular orange. Not the right orange, according to Lily, James, and Sophie (the cockatiel owners).
"It's more like... sunset orange," Sophie tried to explain. This led to mixing colors with crayons. Which led to wax everywhere. Which led to me finding orange crayon shavings in the pencil sharpener three days later.
Someone tried using highlighter.
Don't use highlighter.
Wednesday Got Weird
Lily brought photos of her cockatiel, Mango. Passed them around during morning work.
Suddenly everyone noticed cockatiels have these long tail feathers. Like, really long. Half their body length. The coloring pages made more sense but now everyone wanted to extend the tails off the paper.
We taped extra paper to the bottom of the pages. Twenty-two kids. Twenty-two paper extensions. The custodian asked why our recycling bin was full of paper strips.
Teacher Tip:
Just start with legal-size paper. Trust me on this one.
Also Wednesday: discovered cockatiels can live 20+ years. This caused an existential crisis for Michael who thought all birds lived "like two years or something."
The Whistle Thing
Thursday. Oh, Thursday.
James mentioned his cockatiel whistles the Andy Griffith theme. I made the mistake of asking if anyone knew that song.
No one did. So I hummed it.
For the rest of the day, everyone whistled while coloring. Not the Andy Griffith theme. Just... whistling. Random whistling. Claimed they were "thinking like cockatiels."
The music teacher asked what I'd done to them.
Friday's Gallery
We displayed all the cockatiel pages on the bulletin board. They looked like a pet store explosion.
Gray bodies, yellow heads, orange cheeks—mostly. Emma made hers rainbow "because pet cockatiels can be different colors." She wasn't wrong. Looked it up during lunch. There are lutino cockatiels, pearl cockatiels, even white ones.
Should've looked that up Monday.
The kindergarten class walked by our display after library. One little kid pointed and yelled "BIRD PARTY!" That's... actually pretty accurate.
Quick Questions from Parents
Can we get printables for home?
Yes, but warning: your kid will want to color emotional crests on everything. Found crest doodles on someone's math worksheet.
Why does my kid keep whistling?
That's my fault. It'll pass. Probably by Tuesday.
Are cockatiels actually good pets?
According to Lily, James, and Sophie: yes. According to Sophie's mom who has to clean the cage: ask me in private.
Where did all these cockatiel facts come from?
Three seven-year-old bird experts who wouldn't let me teach anything incorrectly. Best and worst teaching assistants ever.
Next week we're doing fish. Nobody better have a pet fish.
