"They're pet birds. That doesn't count." Sarah, my bird expert who knows everything about eagles, was firmly against our budgie coloring pages during morning work.

This started a debate that lasted through snack.

Turns out, half my second graders thought budgies were invented by pet stores. The other half had them at home and were suddenly the experts on everything. Marcus, who never talks, gave a five-minute presentation about his budgie named Jeff who apparently says "chicken nugget" perfectly.

He was right. Those little lines on their heads and wings? Suddenly everyone needed to add "tiger stripes" to their budgies. With markers. The fat markers. This was going to be interesting.

Emma made her budgie striped like an actual tiger—orange and black. "It's a tiger budgie," she explained, like that was obvious. By lunch, we had zebra budgies, rainbow stripe budgies, and one budgie that looked like the American flag because of course we did.

The Australia Situation

Someone's mom sent a note saying budgies are from Australia and could we please discuss that.

Sure.

Except my class decided Australian budgies must be upside down. I tried explaining. Really tried. But then Kevin drew his budgie hanging from a branch by its feet and honestly? It was creative. We went with it.

We did manage to locate Australia on the map. Then had to explain why their cousin in California doesn't have wild budgies in their backyard. Then had to explain why pet budgies can't fly back to Australia.

It was a long Thursday.

What Actually Worked

The measuring thing was accidentally brilliant. Someone asked how big budgies really are, so we measured with rulers. Seven inches, roughly.

Every kid measured their hand. Then their pencil. Then everything.

But here's what happened: they started drawing their budgies actual size. No more giant mutant budgies taking up the whole page. They made little seven-inch budgies and suddenly wanted to make flocks. Tiny flocks. Ella made twelve budgies on one page, all different colors, which she informed me was "scientifically accurate for pet store budgies."

The comparing to classroom objects stuck too. "It's smaller than my juice box!" became the measurement standard.

Three weeks later, they still remember budgies are seven inches. They've forgotten everything about Antarctica from last month, but budgie size? Locked in.

Why does my kid suddenly want a budgie?

Because they colored seventeen of them and now think they're bird experts. Also, Marcus brought photos of Jeff (his budgie) for show-and-tell. Jeff wearing a tiny hat didn't help.
